I am in love with this software already

This is an amazing little package for the amount of stuff in it.
I am loving that it is a really well featured sequencer.
I am loving the guitar amp simulations which you get with it.
I am loving the variety of soft-synths that come with it.
I am loving the relative ease with which I have been able to record some vocals and guitar and turn it into something listenable.
I note the previous reviewer said he had difficulty setting everything up - and lets face it setting up a home recording facility is not trivial as you try to understand how to use your soundcard or whatever to get sounds into your computer so I sympathise with his pain - but I dont believe that is the fault of this software. You will have that pain ( aka learning curve) whatever audio sequencer software you choose. It does everything I could have wished and more and has been rock solid and stable. The interface is lovely compared to some sequencers I have used in the past. And the price was pretty amazing.
I found the manual and basic tutorials clear and useful but I admit I did already have some familiarity with the concepts of recording audio and wiring up my microphones, guitar and mixer to my soundcard to get sound in and out of the PC.
I have used a few different PC based sequencers in the past and usually had trouble with performance and stability. This software is running like a dream. I fully recommend it if you want to explore the world of audio recording or creation and are dithering about what sequencer to try. |
Great - but needs your attention

As a Garageband and Logic Express user I have significant experience of recording using a DAW. I bought this to run a mobile DAW setup on my laptop. Paired with an Alesis USB mixer this offers a very reasonable way of getting song ideas and basic mixes together. IT's fairly straightforward but don't expect to jump in without studying the tutorials or familiarising yourself with the basics of DAW based recording. Levels are easy to clip with this software so watch your input levels carefully.
Excellent range of built in effects and the fact that it will host VSTs is a bonus for the money. I have recorded two really excellent tracks using this software that needed very little in the way of mastering when transferred over to my Mac for my latest CD release.
Overall a solid contender for best beginner DAW on the PC.
My setup - 2Ghz Dual Core 17" laptop with 2 GB ram. Alesis Multimix 4 USB mixer, Behringer C1 Condenser mic. |

I had great expectations for this product, but here I am, after two weeks, still fannying about with the first tutorials!
Baiscally the tutorial and book doesn't match up with what you get when you load the programme, for example the demo file isn't there, and there are other screenshots in the book that don't match up with what you see on your PC screen.
I have contacted Cakewalk for an explanation, and depending on their reply, I may update this review! |
Not as described.

| Simply...this product is incredibly frustrating...and takes weeks if not months to get used to. It advertises 'simplicity' and yet it is one of the most pointlessly frustrating and complex pieces of music creation/editing software out there. Also dont bother come here if you dont have a midi keyboard or usb synth board, as that is the only way your going to be able to make any decent music on this. The tutorials are terrible, and dont explain anything, and I find it hard to understand why there is a need to search through hundreds of files each time you want to add another instrument to your composition. Its no surprise that this product is relatively cheap compared to most music creation software...because its rubbish :) |
Beware this product

| Although bought on a recommendation and being reasonably computer literate, I found this program totally incomprehensible. When working through the manual, the program did not function as described. How could this be? Became vexed and frustrated. There seemed to be number of issues lurking down the line judging by the forums. Gave up and bought Magix' Samplitude instead. Got this working in a day! |
