Family Tree Maker, 2010

Review Date: November 14, 2009

I have been using FTM 2010 for several weeks, and am very satisfied with it. Having previously used FTM 2009, there are several features that I have found to be considerably improved. The most significant of these are the 'enhanced nodes' in the 'People' workspace, the improved mapping controls in the 'Places' workspace, and the better integration with Ancestry website. The 'enhanced nodes' feature adds thumbnails and lifespan dates to the 'boxes' in the pedigree. If you have several generations of ancestors with the same name, this greatly reduces the likelihood of confusion when working on your tree. One of the most irritating aspects of the previous version of FTM was its propensity to mis-locate places on the map, even when you entered the correct county and country. This issue has been addressed in the 2010 version by the provision of a push-pin facility, which enables the user to override the software's automatic choice. The integration with Ancestry allows both uploading trees to, and downloading them from the website. However, the trees are still not synchronised, so that working on either one will not update the other. This is one aspect that will hopefully be addressed in the future. The only other major gripe I have with the software is that there is no facility to identify individuals on group photographs. If you have a wedding-group photo with a dozen or more people on it, you can very easily link all the individuals to the one photograph, but in order to know who is who, you have to write tedious descriptions - "the third person from the left on the second row from the front, etc" - in order for them to be of any real value. Having previously been a user of the (free) Family Tree Builder software, which has this facility, it is disappointing that FTM have not made something similar available. Notwithstanding this, the software is both very easy and satisfying to use, and has advanced features that will suit the most demanding of family historians.
I now have a family

My father died when I was 10 years old and I had no idea of any family I had on his side as he was Irish and we live in Bristol. At the time (1964) technology was not what it is now, so any Irish family information died with him. I tried Genes reunited with some success but since using this Family Tree Maker I have so much information its untrue - I also exchange emails with relatives I never knew I had. The part which still amazes me is when I type in a name it gives me a "clue". Clicking on these clues takes you to information from other people looking for relatives and also formal records i.e Census records of all sorts, Birth, Death, Marriage etc.

Before using Family tree maker I had maybe 8-10 names in my family tree- I now have over 200.
Whatever I paid for Family Tree Maker, If I doubled the price it would still be a bargain
Definitely recommend

If genealogy is your thing this is a must buy. I was suspicious thinking I would have problems installing it but no, glad I was wrong. So easy and I downloaded my tree from a genealogy site (once again so very easy) and now when I am researching up pops a leaf to say there are records for that person and if you are a member of Ancestry.com it takes you right to the records or other people researching the same person. Absolutely brilliant. Well worth every penny.
I wish I'd done this a long time ago

Drawing up my family tree is something that I've thought about for a long time but have always put off doing because of the effort involved, but with this software it's so easy that I wish it had been available years ago. In less than one week I've entered the information that I already knew, and also spoken to various family members to find out more. With those details entered it's been able to show me lots of references including actual scans of birth/marriage records, and now that my tree is filling out I'm using census records to find out more.
This software package has proved to be so easy to use that I haven't even had to read the instructions yet - it really is that intuitive. It also looks professional, and having installed it on my laptop I've been able to carry it with me when I've been asking people for help. The fact that it looks so good has helped to get them interested too, and encouraged them to take an interest in remembering more details.
There are just two downsides that I've encountered with this package. Firstly, it only has a six month subscription to the Ancestry internet service - beyond that subscription charges are made, though the software itself will continue to work. Secondly, some of the records (such as copies of death certificates) are only visible in full by purchasing a copy of them.
However, there are so many positives to using Ancestry Platinum edition that I can recommend it wholeheartedly, and I don't think that anyone who wants to compile their family tree would be disappointed with it.
A brilliant buy - beware you won't want to leave your PC!

Reviewer: Mrs. A. BLACKWOOD,
I bought the Family Tree Maker after being recommended it by a friend. Installation was a little tricky but once it was installed everything was fine and I was able to register the disc and start the 6 months free essential membership of Ancestry. After transferring details from a 2005 edition (straightforward) on to this programme I was away...
Ancestry searches it's records and puts a leaf symbol next to any names it has found possible records etc. I have found out more and developed our family tree more than I ever thought possible. The programme is easy to use and one of the things I love is being able to produce charts and reports in PDF and then email them to family. brilliant!
